Comparison · hardware wallets
Europe’s two best-known hardware wallet makers both use certified secure chips, yet they take different roads. Here is who wins on each point, and which model each road leads to.

Short answer
If you want to be able to verify what your device does, choose Trezor: all its software is public, and the Safe models still carry a certified chip. If you hold coins Trezor does not support (Polkadot, Sui, NEAR, Hedera) or want a large E Ink screen, Ledger is the logical pick.
Head to head
A tick marks the brand that does better on that point; a draw gets no tick.
| Topic | Trezor (opens in a new tab) | Ledger (opens in a new tab) |
|---|---|---|
| Open source | Advantage: Firmware and app fully public | Drawback: App yes; secure element OS no |
| Secure element | EAL6+ in every Safe model | EAL5+ or EAL6+, depending on model |
| Coins | Drawback: Thousands; no Polkadot, Sui, NEAR, Hedera | Advantage: Includes Polkadot, Sui, NEAR, Hedera |
| iPhone | Full use only with the Safe 7 | Advantage: Any Bluetooth model |
| Cloud backup | Advantage: None: only you hold your phrase | Optional paid Ledger Recover |
| Data breaches | Contact details via suppliers (2024, 2026) | Customer data incl. home addresses (2020) |
| Prices | €59 to €249 | €59 to €399 |
Open source
Everything Trezor ships is on GitHub under GPL-3.0: the device firmware and the Trezor Suite app. Researchers can read exactly what happens to your keys, and Trezor’s chip choice involves no secrecy agreement with the chipmaker.
Ledger publishes its app and its per-coin apps, but not the operating system on its secure element, which is covered by a non-disclosure agreement with STMicroelectronics. On that layer you have to take Ledger at its word.
Backup
Since 2023 Ledger has offered Ledger Recover, a paid subscription that encrypts your recovery phrase and splits it into three parts held by Coincover, Ledger and EscrowTech. Two parts plus an ID check restore your wallet. It is opt-in: without a subscription nothing changes.
Even so, many users were uneasy, because it showed that the firmware can extract the phrase from the chip when you permit it. Trezor has no such service. You keep your own backup, on paper, in steel or split with Multi-share Backup.
Breaches and phishing
Neither brand has had devices cracked remotely. Customer data has leaked, though, and phishing followed. Ledger’s 2020 breach exposed around a million email addresses and the names, postal addresses and phone numbers of about 272,000 people. In December 2023 malicious code briefly sat in Ledger Connect Kit, a library used by websites; Ledger pulled it within 40 minutes of finding it.
Trezor customers’ contact details leaked in 2024 and 2026 through outside support, shipping and newsletter services. In September 2026 about 347,000 subscribers received a fake alert via the Brevo newsletter platform. The lesson is identical for both: no brand will ever ask for your recovery phrase.

Entry level
Same money, two buttons each and a small screen. The difference is openness and coin support.

For most beginners our pick is the Safe 3: same price, and everything it does can be checked in public. Hold Polkadot or Sui? Then the Nano S Plus makes more sense.

Both keep keys inside a certified chip, and neither has had devices cracked remotely. Trezor is more transparent because all of its software is public; Ledger suffered the larger customer data leak in 2020. What matters most for your safety is how you store your recovery phrase.
Yes. Set up a new wallet on your Trezor and send your coins from the Ledger to the new addresses. You could technically enter your Ledger phrase on a Trezor, but a fresh phrase is safer if you have any doubt about whether the old one was ever exposed.
An optional paid Ledger subscription that encrypts your recovery phrase into three parts held by Coincover, Ledger and EscrowTech. Two parts and an identity check restore your wallet. Trezor offers nothing comparable.
Not its devices. Customer data leaked from its online shop in 2020, which led to widespread phishing, and in December 2023 malicious code briefly appeared in Ledger Connect Kit, a library websites use; it was removed within 40 minutes of discovery.
Every Ledger with Bluetooth (Nano X, Nano Gen5, Flex and Stax) works with an iPhone. On the Trezor side only the Safe 7 does; the Safe 3 and Safe 5 let an iPhone track, buy and receive.
