Background

What is NEAR Protocol?

By PlatformCrypto.eu editorial team · checked on

NEAR Protocol is a proof-of-stake blockchain for applications, and NEAR is the coin that keeps it running. Its founders, Illia Polosukhin and Alexander Skidanov, first tried to build AI that writes software from plain-language instructions; according to the project's own history, they turned to blockchain in 2018. The main network opened up in stages during 2020. On 13 October that year, validators and the holders who had delegated to them voted on-chain to lift the last limits on transfers, the first community vote in the network's history.

According to that same history, the goal was a blockchain that scales and is easy to use. An account can carry a readable name such as maria.near instead of a long code, which makes addresses easier to share and check. To keep up as usage grows, NEAR splits its workload across shards that process transactions side by side, an approach it calls Nightshade. The first phase, with four shards, went live in November 2021.

The coin has three everyday jobs. It pays for gas, the fee on every action, and that fee is largely burned. It serves as a deposit for data held on the chain, at 1 NEAR per 100 kB. And it is staked to secure the network; validators and those who delegate to them receive newly issued NEAR for this.

That issuance changed recently. NEAR started with 1 billion coins and creates new ones every epoch, 90% for validators and 10% for a protocol treasury. The yearly ceiling was 5% until an upgrade at the end of October 2025 halved it to 2.5%. The new rule only took effect after validators holding 80% of the stake had switched to the new software.

NEAR has no price floor of any kind, so a holding in NEAR can be worth far fewer euros a few weeks from now.

How to buy NEAR Protocol

  1. Choose a platform

At the top you can see where your amount buys the most NEAR, with every fee included.

  2. Open an account

Sign up and verify your identity. Licensed platforms are required to check who you are; it usually takes a few minutes.

  3. Add euros

For example by SEPA bank transfer or by card. Check the deposit fee on the platform first: it differs per method.

  4. Buy NEAR

Enter the amount and confirm. Before you do, check the fee and the price the platform shows you.

Questions about NEAR Protocol

How much is 1 NEAR Protocol worth right now?

On 14 October 2026 at 17:02 CEST, 1 NEAR was worth €4.47 on average: the median mid-market price on 4 platforms. The price changes all the time, and what you pay on a platform also depends on its fees.

Why do NEAR addresses look like names?

Because NEAR supports named accounts, which work a bit like web domains: lucas.near is a valid address, and its owner can create sub-accounts such as app.lucas.near. An account ID uses only lowercase letters, digits and the separators full stop, hyphen and underscore, and it is between 2 and 64 characters long. There are also implicit accounts, a 64-character string derived from a public key. Either kind can receive NEAR, so check every character before you send.

How much new NEAR is created each year?

At most 2.5% of the supply, a cap that has applied since the end of October 2025; before that it was 5%. The new coins are paid out every epoch, with 90% going to validators and 10% to a protocol treasury. The network began with 1 billion NEAR, and there is no fixed maximum.

Why does a NEAR account need to keep some NEAR?

Data stored on NEAR is paid for with a deposit rather than a one-off charge. The account that owns the data locks 1 NEAR for every 100 kB it uses. Locked tokens cannot be spent or staked, but they become available again once the data is deleted.

How are fees paid on NEAR?

Every action on the network costs gas, and gas is always settled in NEAR. The protocol recalculates the gas price in each block based on demand, with a minimum it cannot fall below, and most of the fee is burned. You do not pay gas yourself when you buy NEAR on a trading platform; it arises once coins move on the blockchain, for example when you use an app from a wallet of your own.

What does NEAR have to do with AI?

The founders started out in AI: in 2017 Illia Polosukhin, a co-author of the research paper "Attention Is All You Need", set up NEAR AI with Alexander Skidanov to build models that write code. They moved to blockchain in 2018. Since 2024 the project has presented itself as the "Blockchain for AI", and in November 2024 it launched NEAR AI as a research arm.
