Background

What is Bonk?

By PlatformCrypto.eu editorial team · checked on

BONK is a dog-themed meme coin that lives on Solana. It is an SPL token, the Solana counterpart of an ERC-20 token, so it has no blockchain of its own and moves over Solana's network. Bonk (opens in a new tab) went live on Christmas Day 2022, when a small group of Solana builders released it after a rough end to the year for the crypto market.

The launch is what made BONK known. Instead of selling tokens to investors, its makers handed half of the supply to people who were already active on Solana, from NFT collectors to developers. The rest was split between the early contributors, a community treasury called BonkDAO that token holders can steer, starting liquidity in Solana apps such as Raydium and Orca, and marketing. The paper frames the whole set-up as a reaction to venture-backed tokens that, in its words, preyed on the Solana community.

Supply works in one direction only. All 100 trillion tokens existed from the outset, and the authority that could have added more has been removed, which anyone can confirm on the mint account. Burns have taken a slice out since then, partly through community campaigns and partly through apps that use some of their fees for burning. A single BONK therefore still costs only a small fraction of a cent.

Around the token, the project lists more than 400 integrations, among them its own decentralised exchange and several games. None of that changes what you own: a token with no claim on any income.

In Europe, five of the eight MiCA-licensed platforms in our comparison, Bitvavo, Kraken, Bitpanda, OKX and Bitstamp, offer a euro market for it; Coinbase, Crypto.com and Bybit EU do not. The meme coins overview puts it next to the others.

Price moves follow attention, and a fall can be steep enough to erase most or all of the euros you put in.

How to buy Bonk

  1. Choose a platform

At the top you can see where your amount buys the most BONK, with every fee included.

Sign up and verify your identity. Licensed platforms are required to check who you are; it usually takes a few minutes.

  3. Add euros

For example by SEPA bank transfer or by card. Check the deposit fee on the platform first: it differs per method.

  4. Buy BONK

Enter the amount and confirm. Before you do, check the fee and the price the platform shows you.

Questions about Bonk

How much is 1 Bonk worth right now?

On 16 October 2026 at 17:04 CEST, 1 BONK was worth €0.000002724 on average: the median mid-market price on 4 platforms. The price changes all the time, and what you pay on a platform also depends on its fees.

Why was BONK given away for free?

Its creators wanted it to belong to the people using Solana rather than to venture capital funds. The BONK paper set aside half of the 100 trillion tokens for an airdrop, a free distribution to existing wallets. The four groups were holders of NFTs from 40 Solana collections, traders and DeFi users, artists and collectors of one-off digital art, and developers.

Who is behind BONK?

The paper credits 22 early contributors with the artwork, token design, marketing, integrations and the first liquidity, without naming them. Together they received 21% of the supply, released at a steady rate over three years from 1 January 2023. The current website carries a disclaimer from the BONK Foundation, stating that it is not a registered investment adviser, broker-dealer or financial institution.

How many BONK tokens are left?

Fewer than at launch, and the number cannot go up again. The mint authority on Solana, the only key that could create more, is empty, so the supply is fixed apart from burns. CoinGecko put the remaining supply at about 88 trillion on 16 October 2026, against 100 trillion at the start.

Which network do you choose when withdrawing BONK?

Solana, unless your wallet explicitly holds one of the bridged versions. The original token has the mint address DezXAZ8z7PnrnRJjz3wXBoRgixCa6xjnB7YaB1pPB263, while bridged copies on Ethereum, BNB Chain and other networks each have an address of their own. Solana addresses never start with 0x. Keep a little SOL in the receiving wallet, because Solana charges its network fees in SOL, not in BONK.

Is there a MiCA white paper for BONK?

We found none when we searched ESMA's interim register of crypto-asset white papers on 16 October 2026. For a crypto-asset without an identifiable issuer, MiCA does not require one, according to a European Commission answer that ESMA published in February 2026. A licensed trading platform still has to judge whether a token is suitable before admitting it.

Does owning BONK give you any rights?

No. The BONK paper says the token is not a share in any company and gives no promise of fees, dividends, revenue or profits. What you hold is the token itself, worth whatever other buyers are prepared to pay for it at that moment.
