Background

What is EURC?

By PlatformCrypto.eu editorial team · checked on

EURC (opens in a new tab) is Circle's euro stablecoin: a token that aims to stay worth exactly one euro, backed by euro-denominated assets that the issuer keeps in segregated accounts at regulated financial institutions. Swapping euros for EURC involves no currency exchange, which makes platform costs unusually easy to see. Spend €100 and, once fees and the spread are taken, you normally end up with slightly fewer than 100 EURC; the comparer above shows where that gap is smallest right now.

Circle first issued the token on Ethereum in June 2022. Since 1 July 2024 its sole issuer has been Circle Internet Financial Europe SAS, an electronic money institution in Paris supervised by the ACPR, which entered ESMA's interim MiCA register as an e-money token issuer on that date. Its sister token USDC is also issued by Circle's American company; EURC now comes from the French entity alone. According to Circle, almost 445 million EURC were in circulation on 16 October 2026, and a Big Four firm reports on the reserve every month.

EURC is far from the only euro token under MiCA. In the version of ESMA's register updated on 7 October 2026, 25 companies were listed as issuers of e-money tokens, among them the Société Générale subsidiary SG-Forge with its EURCV. Being in the register says nothing about how widely a token trades, though. In our comparison, EURC has a euro market on Bitvavo, Kraken, Bitpanda and Bybit EU; for other euro and dollar tokens, see the stablecoins overview.

Holding EURC gives you a claim on Circle's French company, not a balance at a bank. A peg is not a guarantee either: on a trading platform supply and demand set the price, and Circle's own white paper names the risk that the market value of EURC drifts away from the euro, for instance if the reserve were to fall short. It also lists the failure of a bank holding reserve money among the risks.

Questions about EURC

How much is 1 EURC worth right now?

On 16 October 2026 at 17:04 CEST, 1 EURC was worth €1.00 on average: the median mid-market price on 3 platforms. The price changes all the time, and what you pay on a platform also depends on its fees.

Is EURC the same as the digital euro?

No. EURC is issued by a private company, Circle, through its French e-money institution. The digital euro is a project of the European Central Bank for a form of digital cash issued by the central bank itself, and it does not exist yet. The ECB says it aims to be ready for a possible first issuance during 2029, assuming the EU legislation is adopted in the course of 2026.

Who can redeem EURC with Circle, and at what cost?

Every holder, according to Circle's white paper, which grants the right to redeem at par at any time to EURC holders worldwide, after anti-money-laundering checks. Article 49 of MiCA adds that redemption may not carry a fee. Minting and redeeming directly takes a Circle Mint account, which is reserved for institutions; an individual normally sells EURC for euros on a trading platform instead, paying that platform's fees.

Which blockchains does EURC run on?

Circle lists nine: Arc, Avalanche, Base, Cronos, Ethereum, Plasma, Solana, Stellar and World Chain. On 16 October 2026 about 72% of all EURC was on Ethereum, at contract 0x1aBaEA1f7C830bD89Acc67eC4af516284b1bC33c, followed by Solana and Base at around 12% each. A withdrawal only arrives if the platform and the receiving wallet use the same network, so check both before you send.

Does EURC pay interest?

No. MiCA bars issuers of e-money tokens from paying interest, and it treats any reward linked to how long you hold the token as interest too. Platforms providing services in e-money tokens are under the same ban. Circle may place the reserve in interest-bearing accounts, but its white paper states that holders have no claim to those earnings.

Are EUROC and EURC the same token?

Yes. EUROC was the original ticker: Circle launched the token in June 2022 as Euro Coin, symbol EUROC, and later made EURC the official name and symbol. According to Circle the contract addresses did not change, so a balance labelled EUROC in an older app or statement is the same token.

EURC or USDC, what changes for someone paying in euros?

Mainly the currency risk. EURC is pegged to the euro, so its value in euros should stay close to one. USDC follows the US dollar, which means its euro value goes up and down with the EUR/USD rate. Both come from the same French Circle entity in the EU, but USDC is the much larger token: over 72 billion against roughly 445 million EURC on 16 October 2026, according to Circle.
