Background

What is Solana?

By PlatformCrypto.eu editorial team · checked on

Solana is a blockchain designed to handle a large volume of transactions at low cost. Anatoly Yakovenko laid out its design in the Solana white paper, and the main network went live as a beta in March 2020. Developers use it for payment services, trading apps and issuing their own tokens.

Its best-known feature is proof of history, a cryptographic clock that records the order of events before validators vote on them. That ordering runs alongside proof of stake, in which validators put SOL at stake to take part in confirming blocks.

SOL is the network's own coin. You use it to pay transaction fees and to delegate to a validator in return for staking rewards. The supply has no upper limit: new SOL is issued as rewards at a rate that started at 8% a year and falls by 15% annually towards 1.5%, while half of every base fee is burned.

Keep in mind that the SOL price is set by the market alone and can fall or rise sharply within hours.

In four steps

How to buy Solana

  1. Choose a platform

At the top you can see where your amount buys the most SOL, with every fee included.

  2. Open an account

Sign up and verify your identity. Licensed platforms are required to check who you are; it usually takes a few minutes.

  3. Add euros

For example by SEPA bank transfer or by card. Check the deposit fee on the platform first: it differs per method.

  4. Buy SOL

Enter the amount and confirm. Before you do, check the fee and the price the platform shows you.

Questions about Solana

How much is 1 Solana worth right now?

On 14 October 2026 at 17:02 CEST, 1 SOL was worth €93.45 on average: the median mid-market price on 7 platforms. The price changes all the time, and what you pay on a platform also depends on its fees.

What is SOL used for?

SOL pays for transactions on Solana. Each signature costs a base fee of 5,000 lamports, a lamport being one billionth of a SOL; half of that base fee is burned and half goes to the validator. You can also delegate SOL to a validator, which adds to its stake and earns you a share of the rewards. Delegating does not give the validator control over your coins.

Is there a maximum supply of SOL?

No. Solana creates new SOL as staking rewards. The schedule started at 8% a year and lowers that rate by 15% each year until it settles at a long-term 1.5%. Part of every fee is burned, which takes some SOL out of circulation again.

What is proof of history?

It is Solana's way of timestamping. The network produces a continuous chain of cryptographic proofs, each showing that a certain amount of time has passed since the previous one. Validators can use that sequence to agree on the order of transactions quickly. Proof of history works together with proof of stake, which decides who validates.

How do you pay for Solana with euros?

The two common routes are a SEPA bank transfer to your account on the platform, after which you buy from your euro balance, or a debit or credit card at checkout. A card skips the transfer step but can carry a surcharge. In our comparison you can switch between "Euro balance" and "Card" and see the difference in SOL straight away; fees for depositing money are not included.

Does MiCA cover Solana?

MiCA regulates the companies that sell SOL to you: they need an EU authorisation as a crypto-asset service provider. For coins that were already trading before 30 December 2024, such as SOL, trading platforms have until 31 December 2027 to make sure a crypto-asset white paper is published where the regulation requires one. Such a white paper is not approved by any regulator, and MiCA says nothing about the price.
