How we chose

Five things that genuinely matter

A hardware wallet has one job: shield your keys and show you what you are signing. So we look first at the chip (is there a certified secure element?) and the screen (can you read a whole address comfortably?).

Then comes everyday fit: does it work with your phone, does it support your coins, and is the software open source so others can check it? How famous a brand is plays no part.

  • Certified secure element
  • A screen large enough to verify addresses
  • Works with your phone
  • Supports your coins
  • Public software

Why Trezor so often?

An open book that is still a vault

For years buyers had to choose: open source (Trezor) or a secure element (Ledger). The Safe range ended that trade-off, with an EAL6+ chip and firmware published under GPL-3.0.

That is why Trezor takes most of our picks. Ledger wins if you hold coins Trezor does not support, or if you want a Bluetooth model under €100. The full story is in Trezor vs Ledger.

Avoid these

The three most expensive hardware wallet mistakes

Almost every loss involving a hardware wallet comes not from the device but from how it was bought or used.

  • Buying a second-hand or “pre-configured” device instead of ordering from the maker
  • Photographing your recovery phrase or typing it into a website or app
  • Not checking the address on the device’s own screen

Frequently asked questions

What is the best hardware wallet for beginners?

The Trezor Safe 3 (€59): easy to set up in Trezor Suite, with a certified chip and two buttons. For more comfort, the Safe 5 with its touchscreen is a sensible step up.

What is the safest hardware wallet?

The security gap between current Trezor and Ledger models is small, since all use a certified chip. The Trezor Safe 7 goes furthest, with three chips from three vendors. How you store your recovery phrase matters more than the model.

Is a cold wallet the same as a hardware wallet?

A cold wallet is any wallet whose key stays offline; a hardware wallet is the most common kind. A paper wallet is also “cold” but clumsier and more error-prone. See our guide to cold wallets.

Is a more expensive hardware wallet more secure?

Not necessarily. Paying more mostly buys convenience: a bigger screen, a touchscreen or Bluetooth. The Trezor Safe 3 has an EAL6+ chip just like the Safe 5.
