Background

What is Hyperliquid?

By PlatformCrypto.eu editorial team · checked on

Hyperliquid is a layer 1 blockchain with a trading venue built into its core. Rather than running an exchange as an app on top of the chain, it makes the order books for spot trading and perpetual futures part of the chain itself, so every order, cancellation and fill is recorded onchain. HYPE is the network's native token.

The chain has two parts that share one consensus protocol, HyperBFT, which its developers say was inspired by HotStuff. HyperCore holds the order books and balances; HyperEVM runs smart contracts the way Ethereum does, with gas paid in HYPE. Core development is led by Hyperliquid Labs, which says it has taken no venture capital or other outside money. The Hyper Foundation, a foundation company in the Cayman Islands, supports the wider ecosystem.

HYPE launched on 29 November 2024 with a fixed maximum of one billion tokens. Roughly 31% went straight to earlier users in a genesis distribution, while the largest share, 38.9%, is held back for future emissions and community rewards, according to the MiCA white paper. Part of the trading fees on Hyperliquid is converted into HYPE and burned.

Validators have a direct say in how the chain runs. Blocks are produced in proportion to the HYPE staked with each validator, the Hyper Foundation delegates HYPE to validators that join its programme, and validators can vote to jail peers that respond too slowly.

The perpetual futures that made Hyperliquid known are leveraged derivatives: a small move in the price can be enough to liquidate a position. Buying HYPE through our comparison is something else: you own the token on a MiCA-authorised platform and open no position on Hyperliquid's exchange. Our page on how we compare explains which costs are counted. HYPE has a price history that only goes back to late 2024, and its euro value can drop steeply within a short time.

How to buy Hyperliquid

  1. Choose a platform

At the top you can see where your amount buys the most HYPE, with every fee included.

  2. Open an account

Sign up and verify your identity. Licensed platforms are required to check who you are; it usually takes a few minutes.

  3. Add euros

For example by SEPA bank transfer or by card. Check the deposit fee on the platform first: it differs per method.

  4. Buy HYPE

Enter the amount and confirm. Before you do, check the fee and the price the platform shows you.

Questions about Hyperliquid

How much is 1 Hyperliquid worth right now?

On 14 October 2026 at 17:02 CEST, 1 HYPE was worth €72.29 on average: the median mid-market price on 5 platforms. The price changes all the time, and what you pay on a platform also depends on its fees.

Is buying HYPE the same as trading on Hyperliquid?

No. Hyperliquid's own exchange is mainly used for perpetual futures, contracts without an expiry date that traders often open with borrowed money. When you buy HYPE on a platform in our comparison, you hold the token itself in your account there. No leverage is involved, and you never need to connect to Hyperliquid.

How many HYPE tokens are there?

At most one billion. According to the MiCA white paper for HYPE, 38.9% is reserved for future emissions and community rewards, 31% went out in the genesis distribution, 23.8% is allocated to core contributors and 6% to the Hyper Foundation's budget. The contributors' share was locked for a year after launch and then vests over three years. HYPE collected by the assistance fund is burned.

What happens to the trading fees on Hyperliquid?

Hyperliquid's documentation says the fees go to the community rather than to a company: to its liquidity vault (HLP), to the deployers of certain markets and to the assistance fund. The assistance fund automatically converts its share into HYPE. That HYPE is then burned, which takes it out of the total supply for good.

Which network should you choose when withdrawing HYPE?

HYPE lives in two parts of the same blockchain: HyperCore, which holds the order books and spot balances, and HyperEVM, which runs smart contracts. Hyperliquid's documentation warns that some exchanges handle HYPE from HyperCore spot balances only, not from HyperEVM. Check which of the two your platform and your wallet support before you send anything, and start with a small test transfer.

Is there a MiCA white paper for HYPE?

Yes. ESMA's interim MiCA register lists several white papers for HYPE, notified through regulators in Malta, Luxembourg and Germany (checked 13 October 2026). Such a document sets out the token's features, rights and risks. No regulator has approved what it says, and having one makes HYPE neither safer nor more stable in price.

How does staking HYPE work on Hyperliquid?

You move HYPE from your spot balance into a staking balance and delegate it to one or more validators. Each delegation is locked for one day, and moving HYPE back to your spot balance takes seven days. Rewards come from the reserve for future emissions; they build up every minute and are added to your stake once a day. Staking is not part of our price comparison.
