Background

What is Sui?

By PlatformCrypto.eu editorial team · checked on

Sui is a layer 1 blockchain organised around objects rather than accounts. Mysten Labs designed it, and the main network opened to the public on 3 May 2023. SUI, the native token, pays for transactions, can be staked with validators and gives holders a say in votes on protocol upgrades.

Each asset on Sui, from a coin balance to a game item, is an object with its own ID and an owner. Developers define those objects in Move, a smart contract language first built at Facebook for the Diem blockchain. Because a transaction names the objects it will use, the network can process transactions that touch different objects side by side.

Validators secure the chain through delegated proof of stake and agree on the order of transactions with Mysticeti, a protocol in which several validators can propose blocks at once. The validator set and its stakes stay fixed for an epoch of about 24 hours. Since September 2023, apps on Sui can also offer zkLogin, which lets people sign in with credentials they already have from providers such as Google.

Supply is capped at ten billion SUI and reaches the market under unlocking schedules. Early investors were barred from moving their initial SUI for a year, until May 2024, and there was no airdrop at launch. Fees for storing data flow into a storage fund, and deleting that data later returns most of the fee.

Sui's governance was put to the test in May 2025, after Cetus, a trading app on the network, was hacked. Part of the stolen funds was frozen, and validators holding 90.9% of the stake then backed a protocol upgrade that moved those funds into a trust wallet for the affected users; the Sui Foundation's own stake was left out of the count. The episode showed that validators can act together to change what happens to funds on the chain. Bear in mind too that SUI's euro price can fall sharply within a matter of days.

Enter the amount and confirm. Before you do, check the fee and the price the platform shows you.

Questions about Sui

How much is 1 Sui worth right now?

On 15 October 2026 at 23:16 CEST, 1 SUI was worth €0.92 on average: the median mid-market price on 4 platforms. The price changes all the time, and what you pay on a platform also depends on its fees.

Who is behind Sui?

Mysten Labs, the company that wrote the Sui white paper and built the network. Its co-founder and CTO Sam Blackshear created Move, the language used for smart contracts on Sui; Move was first developed at Facebook for the Diem blockchain. The Sui Foundation supports the ecosystem and facilitated the validator vote after the Cetus hack in 2025.

How many SUI tokens can exist?

Ten billion, and no more can ever be minted. Not all of them were available from the start: they enter the market under unlocking schedules. For the first year after mainnet launched, initial investors could not move their SUI to the market; that cliff ended in May 2024. Sui chose not to hold an airdrop at launch.

What is Sui's storage fund?

A pool of SUI that pays for keeping data on the network over time. Every transaction that stores data adds a storage fee to the fund. The fund's share of staking rewards goes mostly to validators to cover their storage costs, while its principal is never paid out. If you delete data later, you get 99% of the original storage fee back.

How does staking SUI work?

You delegate SUI to a validator of your choice, and the network wraps it in a stake object that stays in your own custody. Changes take effect at the next epoch, which lasts about 24 hours, and rewards only accrue for epochs in which your stake was active from start to finish. Validators take a commission and can change it without warning.

Is there a MiCA white paper for SUI?

Several. ESMA's interim MiCA register lists white papers for SUI that were notified through supervisors in Germany, Liechtenstein and the Netherlands, among others (checked 13 October 2026). They describe the token and its risks for European buyers. The regulators did not check or approve their content, so a listing tells you nothing about the price of SUI.
