Background

What is Shiba Inu?

By PlatformCrypto.eu editorial team · checked on

Shiba Inu (SHIB) is a meme coin: a cryptocurrency that became known through internet culture and a large online community rather than through a particular technical innovation. An anonymous developer using the name Ryoshi launched it in August 2020 as a token on the Ethereum blockchain. Dogecoin was the inspiration, and the name and mascot refer to the Japanese dog breed.

A wider ecosystem has grown around the token since then. ShibaSwap is a decentralised exchange that runs on Ethereum and on Shibarium, an Ethereum layer 2 network incubated by Shib.io. Shibarium is meant to make transactions cheaper and quicker, and its network fees are paid in BONE, one of several other tokens in the project.

The supply started at one quadrillion SHIB, a 1 followed by 15 zeros. A large part has been burned since: sent to addresses nobody can spend from, which takes those tokens out of circulation permanently. With that many tokens in existence, a single SHIB is worth a small fraction of a cent.

That low unit price says nothing about risk. Like other meme coins, SHIB is prone to large price swings, and the euro value of what you hold can change a lot within days.

How to buy Shiba Inu

  1. Choose a platform

At the top you can see where your amount buys the most SHIB, with every fee included.

  2. Open an account

Sign up and verify your identity. Licensed platforms are required to check who you are; it usually takes a few minutes.

  3. Add euros

For example by SEPA bank transfer or by card. Check the deposit fee on the platform first: it differs per method.

  4. Buy SHIB

Enter the amount and confirm. Before you do, check the fee and the price the platform shows you.

Questions about Shiba Inu

How much is 1 Shiba Inu worth right now?

On 14 October 2026 at 17:02 CEST, 1 SHIB was worth €0.000004518 on average: the median mid-market price on 6 platforms. The price changes all the time, and what you pay on a platform also depends on its fees.

What is Shiba Inu coin?

Shiba Inu (SHIB) is a cryptocurrency that an anonymous developer known as Ryoshi launched in August 2020. It is a token on Ethereum and took Dogecoin as its model. The community has since added a decentralised exchange, ShibaSwap, and a layer 2 network called Shibarium.

Is Shiba Inu a meme coin?

Yes. SHIB began as a meme coin inspired by Dogecoin, with a dog as its mascot, and it is still generally classed that way. It does have tools built around it, such as an exchange and its own network, but like other meme coins it is known for large price swings.

How many Shiba Inu coins are there?

SHIB launched with a total supply of one quadrillion tokens (1,000,000,000,000,000). A large share has been burned since, which means it was sent to addresses that can never spend it. Burned tokens are out of circulation for good, so fewer SHIB are in circulation today than at launch.

Why is one SHIB worth less than a cent?

Because there are so many of them. The price of one token is the total market value divided by the number of tokens, and SHIB started with one quadrillion. Even a large total value therefore works out at a tiny amount per token. A low price per token does not make SHIB cheaper than a coin with a high unit price: what counts is the euro amount you put in.

What is Shibarium?

Shibarium is a layer 2 network for Ethereum, incubated by Shib.io. It is designed to handle transactions faster and with lower network fees than Ethereum itself, and those fees are paid in BONE rather than SHIB. You do not need Shibarium to buy SHIB on a platform; it only matters if you want to use apps in the Shiba Inu ecosystem.

Can you buy Shiba Inu with a card in Europe?

Yes. The licensed platforms we compare all accept card payments, although some take only debit cards. A card usually costs more: where platforms publish a card fee, it ranged from 0% to 4% when we checked on 7 October 2026. Paying from euros already in your account avoids that surcharge, though a platform may charge for receiving a bank transfer, and our comparison does not include deposit fees. Switch between Card and Euro balance in the comparer to see how much SHIB each option leaves you with.
