Background

What is Pepe?

By PlatformCrypto.eu editorial team · checked on

Pepe (PEPE) is a meme coin, a token whose appeal rests on internet culture and the crowd around it rather than on any product. It appeared in April 2023 as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum and takes its name from Pepe the Frog, a cartoon frog that spread across the internet as a meme long before the token existed.

What sets PEPE apart is how openly its makers play it down. The website describes it as a coin "with no intrinsic value or expectation of financial return", says there is no formal team or roadmap, and calls it "completely useless and for entertainment purposes only". Anyone looking for a project with plans, products or a company behind it will not find one here.

The technical set-up is deliberately bare. According to the website, PEPE launched without a presale and without a tax on transfers, the LP tokens that represent its trading pool were burned, and ownership of the contract was given up. That last step can be checked on Etherscan: the owner field now shows the zero address, so the few owner-only controls written into the code, such as a blacklist and limits on holdings, can no longer be used by anyone. The full supply of 420.69 trillion tokens was minted at launch.

That huge supply means a single PEPE trades for a minute fraction of a cent, and even a small euro amount buys a very large number of tokens. The number of tokens in your wallet is not a measure of value, though; their combined euro price is.

Because nothing but attention and sentiment supports its price, PEPE can shed most of its euro value within days, and money put into it can be lost almost entirely.

Questions about Pepe

How much is 1 Pepe worth right now?

On 14 October 2026 at 17:02 CEST, 1 PEPE was worth €0.000003617 on average: the median mid-market price on 5 platforms. The price changes all the time, and what you pay on a platform also depends on its fees.

Is Pepe coin linked to Pepe the Frog?

Only by name and image. The cartoon frog was created by the artist Matt Furie and only later turned into a meme. The coin's website states that it has no association with Matt Furie or his creation and describes the token as a homage to the meme.

What can you actually do with PEPE?

Hold it, send it and trade it, and that is about it. There is no app, no network and no service behind the token, and holding it gives you no vote and no claim on any income. The project's own website calls the coin completely useless and says it exists for entertainment purposes only.

How many PEPE tokens exist?

The contract created 420,690,000,000,000 PEPE in one go at launch, roughly 420.69 trillion. Its code has no way to issue more. Holders can burn their own tokens, which destroys them, and by 13 October 2026 just over 100 million PEPE had disappeared that way according to Etherscan, a tiny share of the total.

Why is one PEPE worth only a fraction of a cent?

It comes down to the sheer number of tokens. Divide the total market value by more than 420 trillion units and each one ends up worth very little. The unit price therefore tells you nothing about whether PEPE is expensive or cheap; the only figure that matters for you is the euro value of your holding.

Which network does PEPE use, and what should you check when withdrawing?

PEPE is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum, at contract address 0x6982508145454Ce325dDbE47a25d4ec3d2311933. Anyone can deploy a token called Pepe, so compare that address before you add PEPE to a wallet. When withdrawing from a platform, choose the Ethereum (ERC-20) network and an Ethereum address you control, starting with 0x. Moving the tokens on from there costs gas, which is paid in ETH, so the wallet also needs a small amount of ether.
