Background

What is Uniswap?

By PlatformCrypto.eu editorial team · checked on

Uniswap is not a business you open an account with. It is a set of smart contracts that let people swap tokens straight from their own wallets, with nobody holding the funds in between. Hayden Adams deployed the first version to Ethereum on 2 November 2018. A company, Uniswap Labs, builds the best-known web app and a wallet on top, but its app is only one of several ways to reach the contracts.

Trades do not match a buyer with a seller. Each pool holds two tokens supplied by liquidity providers, and a formula sets the price from the ratio between them; the providers usually earn the trading fees in return. The current version, v4, dates from January 2025, and the protocol now runs on several networks besides Ethereum mainnet, including Arbitrum, Base and Optimism.

UNI followed in September 2020 as the governance token, with 1 billion units created up front. For years after that, every trading fee still went to liquidity providers. That changed in December 2025, when holders backed UNIfication, a joint plan from Uniswap Labs and the Uniswap Foundation, by roughly 125.3 million votes to 742. A share of the fees on a first selection of Ethereum pools now flows to the protocol and can only be claimed by burning UNI, and 100 million UNI from the treasury were burned in one go.

Regulators have looked at the project as well. In the United States, the SEC sent Uniswap Labs a Wells notice in 2024, signalling possible enforcement action. In February 2025 the company announced that the regulator had closed its investigation without taking any action.

Holding UNI gives you a say in governance, not a claim on income, and the token's euro price can fall steeply within days.

In four steps

How to buy Uniswap

  1. Choose a platform

At the top you can see where your amount buys the most UNI, with every fee included.

  2. Open an account

Sign up and verify your identity. Licensed platforms are required to check who you are; it usually takes a few minutes.

  3. Add euros

For example by SEPA bank transfer or by card. Check the deposit fee on the platform first: it differs per method.

  4. Buy UNI

Enter the amount and confirm. Before you do, check the fee and the price the platform shows you.

Questions about Uniswap

How much is 1 Uniswap worth right now?

On 14 October 2026 at 17:02 CEST, 1 UNI was worth €6.45 on average: the median mid-market price on 5 platforms. The price changes all the time, and what you pay on a platform also depends on its fees.

Is Uniswap a company or an exchange?

The name covers both, which can be confusing. The Uniswap Protocol is a decentralised exchange: a set of smart contracts that no single party controls, where every swap is self-custodial. Uniswap Labs is a company that builds software on top of it, such as the web app and a wallet. UNI is the protocol's governance token, not a share in Uniswap Labs.

What can you do with UNI?

Mainly vote. UNI holders decide how the treasury is spent, whether and where the protocol fee is switched on, and whether to mint extra UNI. Your tokens only carry voting power after you delegate it, either to your own address or to someone you trust to vote on your behalf. Delegating does not move the tokens themselves.

How many UNI tokens exist?

1 billion UNI were minted at launch in September 2020. Six in ten went to the community, through the airdrop, the treasury and early liquidity rewards; team members, investors and advisers received the rest, vesting over four years. With those four years over, governance may now mint up to 2% of the circulating supply a year. In December 2025, 100 million UNI from the treasury were burned.

Does holding UNI earn you part of Uniswap's fees?

Not directly. Under UNIfication, the protocol's share of trading fees collects in a contract called TokenJar and can only be taken out by burning UNI through a second contract, Firepit. Net sequencer fees from Unichain, Uniswap's own layer 2 network, feed the same mechanism. Nothing is paid out to holders; the result is that UNI leaves circulation.

Who received free UNI in 2020?

Anyone who had used Uniswap before 1 September 2020 could claim 400 UNI, which came to 251,534 addresses. Liquidity providers and holders of the project's SOCKS tokens received a separate allocation. Together, these retroactive grants made up 15% of the supply.

Which network should you use to withdraw UNI?

UNI was issued as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum, so a wallet that handles Ethereum tokens can hold it. If a platform lets you pick between networks for a withdrawal, choose one that your receiving wallet supports and use the address for that network. Tokens sent over a network the wallet does not support can be difficult, or even impossible, to get back.
